about
This was an experiment.
The main drums were played with a Pocket Operator (PO-12) that I put on a high volume on the unit (BPM+15) so that the sound was really saturated. Then I turned up the gain on my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 as it was recording so it would distort more and more as the track played. Then I added more distortion on-top of it with a VST called Rift. Then I recorded a cleaner version of the track at a lower unit volume, lower gain, etc., and sidechained the distorted track to the clean track. So any time the clean track finishes, you get a small distorted pumping tail.
It was recorded in at 24-bit/96Khz and then layered with a metric fuckton of VSTs, some Maschine Mk3 finger-drumming, and even a layer of me beat-boxing (the hi-hats are a blend of that and then some Maschine hats I played). The melody's actually the Computer rhythm loop from a Casio SA-10 courtesy of Bedroom Producers Blog. Couldn't think of a melody, so I pitch-stretched it, and it worked enough I could splice it and get rhythms out of it.
I think the end-result sounds turn-based boss battle music for a game where you fight dancing aliens in their space-labs.
